New AS Roma boss Jose Mourinho wants to bring Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea with him to Italy. The Portuguese was appointed the new head coach of the Serie A club earlier this week and will take over the reins of the club starting next season.
De Gea was in fantastic form against Jose’s new club last night, producing a string of outstanding saves. Despite a 3-2 defeat in Rome, United won the tie 8-5 on aggregate, booking their place in the Europa League final.
Some of the saves De Gea made were world-class, including one from Roma defender Gianluca Mancini from point-blank range. In total, the Spaniard made 10 saves. His impressive performance got him a WhoScored rating of 8.3, despite letting in three goals. In fairness, if De Gea had not produced a performance like that, Roma would probably have gone through to the final. He deservedly won the Man of the match for his incredible display.
This performance was a reminder from the 30-year-old shot-stopper of his own qualities and it came at the right time with his former boss Jose keen to sign him.
Roma’s interest in De Gea:
After Jose was named the new Roma manager, rumours started linking him with his former players at United. But his interest in bringing De Gea with him to Rome is pretty strong. And according to TodoFichajes, the 58-year-old coach is very keen to sign De Gea this summer.
De Gea enjoyed some of his best years at United under Jose. His incredible performance against Arsenal in December 2017 in which he made a Premier League record 14 saves, came when Jose was United manager. He won the Europa League and the League Cup under Jose before the Portuguese left the club in 2018.
As for Roma, their goalkeeping situation is not good. First-choice keeper Pau Lopez injured himself against United in the first-leg at Old Trafford. And further scans revealed that he dislocated his shoulder, which will keep him out for a significant period.
His replacement Mirante is 37 and past his best days. No wonder Jose wants to upgrade in that position ahead of next season. And De Gea is his number one target.
Goalkeeping dilemma for United:
De Gea started the current season as United’s preferred goalkeeper, despite the arrival of Dean Henderson from his loan spell at Sheffield United. Henderson only started the cup competitions and Europa League games.
But De Gea lost his number one spot and has not featured in the league since February. And there were rumours last month that many United players want Henderson to be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have to sell one of the two goalkeepers, as Henderson and De Gea earn a combine of £500,000-a-week. With the Englishman signing a new deal at the start of the season, it is likely that De Gea will leave.
A fee of £25 million would be enough to convince United to sell De Gea. But it remains to be seen whether Roma can afford De Gea’s huge wages or will the player take a pay-cut to join his former coach.
