Newcastle 0 Arsenal 2 – Sunday 2 May 2pm
We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.
The first half was absolutely terrible, the second half worse.
“An absolute prime example of the ridiculous nonsense you have to put up with supporting Newcastle.
“At the beginning of the match, Sky Sports commentator Don Goodman trots out the line of how well “Brucie” has done (4th bottom remember) and how he got some unjustified stick from fans, pundits etc.
“Towards the end of the first half, Goodman expresses his dismay that Newcastle have failed to take the game to a second choice Arsenal team with their focus on a UEFA Cup tie either side of the match.
“That’s the reason for the stick Don and I guess we can add you to the list of fickle pundits jumping on the bandwagon.
“We have witnessed this too many times against beatable opposition as Bruce cowers instead of attacking, and resting on the laurels of a nine point gap to Fulham could yet have its folly, with nine to play for before our final day at Craven Cottage and normal service apparently resumed for timid Bruceball.”
“Alarming lack off application and skill, everyone wanted Joelinton out and Bruce obliged and replaced him with 11 Joelintons.
“A game which should have been a free hit ended up being a damp squib with the players seemingly with their minds in Skegness, or wherever exotic destination we will be allowed to go to post Covid!
“Not a single positive to take at all.”
“We lost to the better team by a country mile, simple as that.
“Tactics and application all wrong and changes made too late.
“Silly red card and back to old habits.
“The only good thing is that Fulham lost, though I still feel uneasy.
“If Fulham beat Burnley and Southampton, our game with Sheffield United will be a pressure one.
“We always do things the hard way.
“This is life on the Mike Ashley treadmill with Steve Bruce the head coach.
“It doesn’t look like changing anytime soon.”
“There was a buzz before this game that Arsenal, who made 8 changes amid European games, could be there for the takin.
“But from the moment they went ahead it never really looked likely and the second goal killed it.
“Whatever Bruce and his staff tried to engineer today it just hasn’t worked.
“The final few points we need to see off any lingering risks will have to come from the so called more winnable games.
“Real shame for that red card for the returning Fab Schär.”
“Newcastle allowed themselves to be bossed by a bang average Arsenal team for 95 minutes as the London team won 2-0 without breaking sweat.
“An early goal by Elneny was doubled by Aubameyang midway through the second half but the game should have been abandoned after 5 minutes at 1-0, such was United’s disinterest in trying to make a game of it.
“No shots, no effort, only Fabian Schar caught the eye for stupidly getting sent off late in the game.
“It was a complete waste of time from start to finish.
“Before the game all of the talk was whether Arsenal would be taking the game seriously with their Europa League semi final second leg coming up but it was the team in black and white who had already had their end of season party.
“Lucky they have nothing to play for, I mean it’s not like they can still get relegated or anything.”
“Hugely, hugely disappointing performance.
“We played like a team who thought they were already safe, which was really surprising considering the fight we showed last week.
“Just shows Bruce never seems to be able to maintain any momentum.
“For the record I think we already may have just enough points.
“I can only see Fulham getting to 35 points at best, but even so this was a big chance today to kill off any doubt whatsoever, and we played pretty wretchedly.
“One thing I always liked about Rafa’s teams was we always played hard right till the end of the season.
“Sadly, that attitude seems to have gone out the door with him.”
“When the most interesting part of the game was the updates on protests at a different game, it tells you all you need to know.
“Poor from nearly every player today.
“Ah well, let’s keep the relegation battle alive.”
“Seriously. What the hell was going on with those subs?
“Centre back for a centre back at 0-2 down, no Gayle until too late.
“I don’t care if it’s Bruce or Jones, this is shambolic haphazard management.
“Just as well Fulham can’t realistically catch this shower…”
“A very disappointing performance lacking in any intensity.
“No one taking any responsibility, at times it was who could pass it back the furthest.
“We got what we deserved today, and that was against Arsenal’s reserves…”
